Community Funding

What is Community Funding?
Community funding is for communities and non-profit partners of the Alliance. Community project funding can support a variety of community priorities including, but not limited to: research, land-based activities, community events, documentation, education, policy, and evaluation work. Please note that core operational expenses are not eligible for community funding.

Funding Range
$5,000 – $30,000

Proposal Guidelines
Proposals should be 2-4 pages and include the following headings:

  • Organization Background
  • Project Description/Rationale
  • Partners
  • Expected Outcomes/Goals
  • Timeline
  • Budget
Research Funding

What is Research Funding?
Research funding is for co-applicants (researchers) and students of the Alliance who are conducting research related to the mission and objectives of the WHA. Research funding can support travel, research stipends, conference fees, honoraria, research equipment, and related supplies.

Funding Range
$2,000 – $15,000

Proposal Guidelines
Proposals should be 3-4 pages and include the following headings:

  • Research Description/Rationale
  • Partners
  • Objectives
  • Methodology
  • Expected Outcomes/Goals
  • Timeline
  • Budget
  • Bibliography (appendix to the 3-4 page proposal)

Project Guidelines
Community projects should strive to include the following guidelines. These guidelines will be taken into consideration by the Community Project Committee when making funding decisions:

  • Relevant to the mission & objectives of the WHA
  • Benefits the community in some way
  • Demonstrates enduring value
  • Aligns with community’s priorities and needs
  • Realistic
  • Includes tangible outcomes
  • Involves students and/or community youth
  • Involves more than one community
  • Organization is involved and contributes to WHA

Research Guidelines
Research projects should strive to include the following guidelines. These guidelines will be taken into consideration by the Research Committee when making funding decisions:

  • Relevant to the mission & objectives of the WHA
  • Benefits the community in some way
  • Shows academic merit
  • Culturally appropriate
  • Community-based
  • Demonstrates enduring value
  • Aligns with community’s priorities and needs
  • Realistic
  • Includes tangible outcomes
  • Involves students and/or community youth
  • Involves more than one community
  • Researcher is involved and contributes to WHA
